Who we are

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) is a division of the Ministry of National security. It was established by the Cabinet in January 2005 as the National Disaster Office responsible for managing all aspects of the disaster management cycle, which includes mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. The function of the ODPM is not limited to coordinating efficient responses when needed but also includes proactive, pre-emptive activities geared towards developing a more informed, resilient public.

Our approach

Prevention

The ODPM informs the development of mitigation strategies and plans and influences the formulation of policies, through research and collaboration with key stakeholders.

Mitigation

Mitigation is the lessening or limitation of the adverse impacts of hazards and related disasters. The adverse impacts of hazards often cannot be prevented fully, but their scale or severity can be substantially lessened by various strategies and actions.

Preparedness

The ODPM strengthens community involvement as it relates to Comprehensive Disaster Management while supporting the coordination of first responders.

Response

The ODPM ensures that all disaster management agencies are well-equipped to respond before and during a hazard or disaster

Recovery

The ODPM coordinates the recovery process with National, Regional and International agencies.

Our Stakeholders

Some of our stakeholders include the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government, the Ministry of Works and Transport, the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force (TTDF), the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service (TTFS), the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS), SEWA International TT, Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross and ITNAC just to name a few. The relationships forged through daily and weekly interactions with stakeholders are critical to the successful implementation and facilitation of National DRM practices and protocols.
