T&T represented at the United Nations VIII Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas and the Caribbean (RP23)

During the period Feb 28- Mar 3, Trinidad and Tobago was represented at the United Nations VIII Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas and the Caribbean (RP23) held in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

In keeping with the theme "Science and Technology for the Comprehensive Management of Disaster Risk", Minister of National Security, the Honourable Fitzgerald Hinds, presented an official written statement to the Platform. In highlighting the progress of Trinidad and Tobago in implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Honourable Minister reaffirmed our commitment to working with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and all other risk management actors to improve the resilience of our region.

Additionally, the CEO of the ODPM, Major General Rodney Smart, alongside the ODPM’s Planning and Development Officer, Mr. Anwar Baksh, were in attendance, during which they participated in sessions focusing on reducing disaster risk, early warning systems, integrating technology in climate change adaptation and creating a culture of hazard prevention, among numerous others.

These sessions are important to share learning and exchange best practices in disaster risk reduction of multiple stakeholders across sectors. At the platform, various Ministers and High-Level Government representatives of different sectors from various nations met to take stock to adopt the Punta Del Este Declaration and the amendments to the Regional Action Plan which provides the framework for moving forward over the next two years.

At the end of this platform, Assistant Secretary-General and Special Representative (ASGRS) of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction in the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Mami Mizutori, commended the work of all regional leaders and delegations who participated virtually and in person, highlighting that, though the task ahead may appear difficult, the messages and decisions from this platform is an assurance that they can be achieved. This platform provided the space for several bilateral exchanges and networking, allowing delegates to return to their work stations with new and innovative ideas on how to address disaster risk.
