World Tsunami Awareness Day Outreach 2021


On Friday November 5th 2021, is World Tsunami Awareness Day. In commemoration of this significant observance, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) together with the Disaster Management Unit of the Mayaro/Rio Claro Regional Corporation partnered hosted a community outreach at the Mayaro Junction. Residents from the various communities in the Mayaro, Guayaguayare  and Rio Claro excitedly participated in the outreach event aimed at sensitising coastal communities about  tsunamis and how to better prepared for this hazard.

The ODPM and the DMU disseminated critical tsunami awareness information to members of the public. Meanwhile, Training and Education Officer, Mr. Kellon Sankar along with Planning and Development Officer Mr Anwar Baksh and Hazard and Mitigation Specialist Mrs. Cumira Gulston visited the Mayaro Secondary School where eager students learnt about the importance of preparing for tsunamis.

The Honourable Rushton Paray M.P. for the Mayaro/Rio Claro constituency, Ms. Renelle Kissoon, Councillor for Cocal/ Mafeking,  and Mr. David Law, Councillor for Rio Claro South  were on hand to engage members of the public at the outreach and shared their support in building disaster resilience throughout these communities. 

The ODPM joins the international community in commemorating World Tsunami Awareness Day 2021 and continues to partner with other agencies in strengthening our nation’s resilience against tsunamis.
