How Does PANS Work?

What Is Pans?
The Public Alert Notification System (PANS) is a mass
notification system for Trinidad and Tobago. It allows the
ODPM and other state agencies to provide emergency alert
information to a defined audience, affected area or at a
countrywide scale. PANS will warn citizens and visitors to
Trinidad and Tobago of critical information/emergencies and
provide timely information to protect lives and property.

When will the Public Alert
Notification System (PANS)
be used?
Initially, the ODPM will use PANS to send alerts to persons who signed up for the system and may be affected by emergencies and disasters. However, over time, the ODPM will train other alerting authorities to send PANS messages. The platform also incorporates common alerting protocol (CAP) compliant emergency and incident management tools to create location-specific alerts to cover areas as large as an entire municipal corporation, Tobago or much smaller villages and communities.

What are the benefits of PANS?
Multi- Hazard Alerting
You will receive alerts on national critical incidents such as:
- Hurricanes
- Tropical Storms
- Major Flooding
- Large Fires
- Public Utility Disruptions
- Tsunamis
- Civil Unrest
- Evacuation Orders
- Explosions
- Significant Biological events
Multi- Channel Alerting
PANS integrates seamlessly with all communication channels and ensures the right message gets through at the right time to the right people. You can receive alerts via a telephone call, text message, email, mobile app notification or fax.

Location- Specific Alerting
PANS allows you to customise the information you would like to
receive and the specific locations that are important to you.
Select areas where you are regularly, such as your home, work,
place of worship or the shopping areas you frequent. For
example, if the only locations of interest you select are Sangre
Grande, Scarborough and Port of Spain, you would not receive
alerts for areas not selected, unless they are of national
importance.
Support to Persons with Disabilities
The notification system will support persons with disabilities or physical impediments such as the blind, deaf and low-vision, by allowing persons to choose their preferred medium of communication.
For example:
- Sending SMS Texts or emails to persons who are deaf
- Calling persons who are blind or have low vision
