Tuesday 28th, November, 2023, the ODPM partnered with the Mayaro Rio Claro Regional Corporation (MRCRC) Disaster Management Unit (DMU) for their coordination of a Tsunami Evacuation Exercise. In the Mayaro district, the Kernahan community is vulnerable to coastal impacts, and the DMU has undertaken mitigation initiatives guided by the Sendai Framework’s Priorities for Action to reduce community vulnerabilities and build capacity through awareness and evacuation practice.

This event is centred on a simulation of an impending tsunami, upon which the DMU alerted Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members to assist with the activation of the Early Warning System (EWS) in the community, such as sirens, and stakeholders/responders to assist with the evacuation.

Also participating in this exercise were members of the Mayaro community, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service (TTFS), the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG), and the ERHA Trinidad & Tobago.

This initiative is implemented under the CDEMA – Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency CU’s “Building the Resilience of the CARIFORUM States to Disaster Risks and Climate Change Impacts” (BRICS) Project as part of the 11th European Development Fund’s Caribbean Regional Indicative Programme (CRIP).
