ODPM and UWI partner for International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) event
Today, October 12th, 2023 the ODPM partnered with the Faculty of Food and Agriculture (FFA), St Augustine Campus, UWI and other agencies, to kick-off the commemoration of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR), recognised annually on October 13th.
Under this year’s IDDRR’s theme, “Fighting Inequality for a Resilient Future” the partners facilitated an event at the FFA titled, Engaging Youth for Disaster Risk Reduction. This event saw a number of university and secondary school students visit various interesting indoor and outdoor exhibitions, which served to broaden their minds and increase their knowledge about disaster risk reduction and management.
Delivering the feature address at the event was Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of National Security, Ms. Denise Phillip. The CEO of the ODPM, Major General (Retired) Rodney Smart, and lecturer in the FFA, Dr. Ronald Roopnarine, also addressed the students.
Along with the ODPM, the other agencies that hosted educational booths included the FFA; the Tunapuna / Piarco Regional Corporation (TPRC); the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS); the National Institute of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (NIHERST); and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP Trinidad and Tobago).
