MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Monday 19th June, 2017 –  5:20 p.m.

ODPM Holds Press Conference to update the public on Tropical Storm Warning

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) states that all national agencies are in a state of readiness. At a press conference held at Ministry of National Security, the ODPM’s Captain (Retired) Neville Wint, called for citizens to remain vigilant, calm and pay attention to relevant advisories from authorised agencies in Trinidad and Tobago namely the Trinidad and TMET Office and the ODPM ONLY.

The ODPM in collaboration with other divisions of Ministry of National Security (the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service), Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government representatives from all Regional Corporations, Ministry of Public Utilities’ representatives such as Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (TTEC), Water and Sewage Authority and Telecommunications Service of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT), Ministry of Health, Ministry of Works and Transport, Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) and Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) has discussed the              pre-positioning and coordinating activities with all first responder agencies, priorities identified are as follows: -

  • Protect the safety and health of all responders

  • Save lives and reduce suffering

  • Protect public health

  • Protect critical infrastructure

  • Protect property

  • Protect the environment

  • Reduce economic and social losses

Citizens should be reassured that national agencies are at a state of readiness and persons are asked to prepare yourself and your families, as well as remain aware of flooding in low lying areas as these surfaces have been substantially saturated by heavy rainfall experienced. The ODPM also encourages persons near land susceptible to land slippage to be especially vigilant of landslides, due to the weather.

We wish to underscore that Trinidad and Tobago is under a Tropical Storm Warning at this time. Citizens are asked to resist following any media, social media posts or unauthorised messages which are not disseminated by the TTMET Office or published on the ODPM’s social media platforms.

Further, issuance of any other information bulletins will be done at 6:30 pm to advise the public of any further developments.
