ODPM Public Advisory 29-09-16
The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) is advising citizens to be vigilant of adverse weather conditions currently being experienced in various areas across Trinidad and Tobago. The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Office (TTMET) issued a bulletin at 1:00 p.m. informing that this rainfall activity is due to the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone and is expected to continue at least for the next 3 to 4 hours. Certain areas across the nation are currently experiencing periods of rain and showers some of which have been heavy and thundery. Conditions are expected to improve towards nightfall.
There is the possibility of localized street or flash flooding in heavy or prolonged downpours, gusty winds may be experienced in the vicinity of showers or thundershowers and there is the likelihood of landslides in areas so prone. Citizens, especially commuters, are advised to be vigilant and cautious as they conduct their daily activities.
The ODPM as the lead coordinator of emergency management continues to work closely with all key stakeholders to be on alert so assistance may be rendered should any adverse impact occur. Despite heavy downpours in varying areas, the ODPM has not received any reports of flooding thus far. The ODPM reminds all citizens that should you be affected by this inclement weather, please contact our Customer Care Centre at 511 and visit our website www.odpm.gov.tt for additional safety tips.
Consequently, we continue to underscore the following:-
If you live in a flood-prone area, place furniture and appliances on a height from the ground and keep sand-bags easily accessible.
After heavy rainfall, stay inside until water levels subside and venture outside only when it is confirmed safe.
Do not walk / drive through flood waters.
Be cautious and vigilant when walking /driving along hillsides or landslide prone areas.
Trinidad and Tobago is not currently under any Tropical Storm threat, Watch or Warning. The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Services is monitoring the weather situation and will advise the ODPM if the situation warrants.
