ODPM HOSTS 2nd PREPARE TT STAKEHOLDER MEETING TO STRENGTHEN SEISMIC DISASTER RISK REDUCTION AND PREPAREDNESS CAPACITY.

On Wednesday 25th November 2020 the ODPM hosted the 2nd stakeholder meeting for the Urban Disaster Resiliency and Preparedness in Trinidad and Tobago (Prepare TT) Pilot Project. This was held at the ODPM’s alternate National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) in Mausica. The Prepare TT pilot project aims at strengthening seismic disaster risk reduction and preparedness measures for the nation’s capital city of Port of Spain.

CEO of the ODPM Major General (Ret’d) Rodney Smart along with representatives of the ODPM met with key stakeholders which included executives, to continue deliberations on the issues surrounding a road map for seismic risk management. Ms. Nicole Williams, National Programme Manager of Miyamoto Trinidad, facilitated the session. During the meeting, the proposed roadmap was shared with the participants to gain their valued input on the way forward. From their discussions the stakeholders showed their support for improved legislation, governance and public education on reducing seismic risk as well as construction of safer and stronger buildings as mitigation measures.

Major General Smart, reiterated his appreciation to the United States Agency for International Development’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) and Miyamoto International for partnering in this critical project.

He also thanked the University of the West Indies including its Seismic Research Centre and Faculty of Engineering, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and all the stakeholders for their valued contributions to the project thus far.

Further plans for the Prepare TT Project include the establishment of sub-committees that will support the strengthening of earthquake mitigation measures in the capital city.
