Carenage Community Tsunami Drill

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) in collaboration with UNESCO/IOC-CTIC  and the Diego Martin Regional Corporation will conduct a Community Tsunami Drill between School Street and Abbe Poujade Street, Carenage on Wednesday 5th February 2020 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.

Residents and stakeholders are invited to a community meeting on the evacuation drill procedures on Tuesday 04th February 2020  at the Carenage Regional Complex, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

The Tsunami Community Drill aims to test the level of tsunami preparedness in the Carenage community through testing the community’s Emergency Operations Plan (EOP),  early warning systems and evacuation routes.

The community tsunami preparedness drill forms part of a national tsunami planning project led by the ODPM, in collaboration with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and its Caribbean Tsunami Information Centre (UNESCO/IOC-CTIC), the Diego Martin Regional Corporation, T&T Police Service and T&T Fire Service.

The aim of the project is multi-faceted, as it primarily intends to strengthen capacities of early warning and response to tsunamis and other coastal hazards in the Caribbean. The project is also geared towards creating opportunities for agencies to practice, assess and improve emergency response times and on-the-ground operations while engaging community stakeholders and improving the concepts and skills learned in training.

THE ODPM WOULD LIKE TO EMPHASISE THAT THE DRILL WILL ONLY BE CONDUCTED WITH RESIDENTS OF THE CARENAGE COMMUNITY. THE DRILL WILL NOT INCLUDE VISITORS TO THE AREA, MOTORISTS OR MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

Traffic will be managed by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to minimise any disruptions to the general public.
