PUBLIC ADVISORY #9

Saturday 20th October, 2018                                                            2:00 P.M.

ADVERSE WEATHER ALERT #3 – ORANGE LEVEL

EXTENDED TO TUESDAY 23rd OCTOBER 2018 AT 6:00PM

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has issued an Adverse Weather Alert #3 – Orange Level for Trinidad and Tobago, extending the period from Thursday 18th October, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. to Tuesday 23rd October, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.

The TTMS has advised that an active Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) continues to produce intermittent periods of rain/showers and thunderstorm activity which can lead to flash flooding and exacerbate existing riverine flooding. Showers can be heavy to torrential at times and produce damaging gusty winds. Landslides/landslips are also likely in areas so prone.

Citizens are reminded that the Riverine Flood Alert #2 – Red Level is still in effect until Friday 26th October 2018 at 12:00 p.m.

Persons impacted by the flooding are asked to remain patient as we try to respond to high-risk communities, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, babies and toddlers.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) would like persons to the necessary precautions to preserve life and property. Shelter in place rather than traversing flood waters.  Here are a few safety tips:

1.      After heavy rainfall, stay inside until water levels have subsided;

2.      Do not walk, play or drive through flood waters of unknown depth and current.

3.      If you must walk through a flood, use a stick to determine the firmness of the ground as well as the depth of the water in front of you.

If impacted by the adverse weather, please contact your Municipal Corporation or the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) through its toll-free hotline numbers.

WE WISH TO UNDERSCORE THAT TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO IS NOT CURRENTLY UNDER ANY TROPICAL STORM OR HURRICANE THREAT, WATCH OR WARNING.
