PUBLIC ADVISORY - PREPARE FOR HAZARDOUS SEA CONDITIONS

PUBLIC ADVISORY

Thursday 4th October, 2018                                                             1:30 p.m.

Prepare for Hazardous Sea Conditions

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has issued a Hazardous Seas Alert #1- Yellow Level for the period Thursday 4th October, 2018 at 12:20 p.m. to Friday 5th October 2018 at 3:00 p.m.

Yellow level means there is the potential of negative impacts. However, damage is avoidable if persons monitor conditions and reduce their level of exposure.

Large breaking waves are likely to affect mainly the northern coastlines of Trinidad and Tobago. However, minimal effects or choppy conditions may occur in sheltered areas as well. These conditions are due to long period swells with forecast values in excess of 12 seconds. The event is expected to be short-lived and will likely last for 24 hours.

The ODPM, as the lead coordinator of emergency management, joins the TTMS in advising all sea bathers, fishermen, and small craft operators to carefully monitor sea conditions and exercise caution during all sea-related activities.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) would like all residents and visitors to Get Ready and Stay Ready by implementing the following safety measures:

●       Avoid entering the sea if unnecessary.

●       Be alert for dangerous breaking waves and currents.

●       Follow the instructions of lifeguards.

●        Monitor official news sources.

Citizens should continue to monitor the website and social media profiles of the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service and the ODPM for weather forecasts, alerts, warnings and cancellations. Visit www.metoffice.gov.tt or wwww.odpm.gov.tt.

WE WISH TO UNDERSCORE THAT TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO IS NOT CURRENTLY UNDER ANY TROPICAL STORM THREAT, WATCH OR WARNING.
