Public Advisory - THE ODPM REMINDS CITIZENS TO IGNORE RUMOURS AND TO “GET READY AND STAY READY” THROUGHOUT THE HURRICANE SEASON

PUBLIC ADVISORY

Sunday 23rd September, 2018                                                                                  6:30 P.M.

THE ODPM REMINDS CITIZENS TO IGNORE RUMOURS AND TO “GET READY AND STAY READY” THROUGHOUT THE HURRICANE SEASON

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) and the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) continue to actively monitor Tropical Storm Kirk in the Atlantic. Trinidad and Tobago is not currently under any Tropical Storm/Hurricane watch or warning at this time.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) in an update at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday 23rd September, 2018 advised that Tropical Storm Kirk has maximum sustained winds near 65 kilometre per hour with higher gusts. The TTMS has advised that some strengthening is forecasted during the next day or two. However, weakening is likely during the middle to latter part of the week, as it approaches the Lesser Antilles.

The TTMS has also advised that the forecast track/cone graphic represents the probable track of the centre of a tropical cyclone. This means that it is possible for the centre of the cyclone to pass anywhere within the shaded/hatched region. The cone does not show the size of the storm or the extent of its wind field. It is also possible for hazardous conditions to occur outside of the cone. The graphic includes estimations based on data, and should not be interpreted as a direct representation of the path of the cyclone.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) continues to actively monitor Tropical Storm Kirk and will issue an official advisory if it necessary.  The TTMS is the national authority to issue such warnings or advisories.

The rumour that Trinidad and Tobago is currently under a Tropical Storm Watch or Warning is false. The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service has not placed Trinidad and Tobago under any Tropical Storm threat, watch or warning.

Citizens are advised to ignore any WhatsApp messages circulating on this matter. Citizens are also asked to stop sharing social media content which may cause unnecessary concern and/or panic.

It is extremely critical that every individual “Get Ready and Stay Ready” throughout the Hurricane Season. The ODPM would like to remind all persons to review your family emergency plans and emergency kits to ensure you have all the items you may need. Double check roofs, windows, doors or shutters of your home or business and secure loose items. Emergency preparedness is a daily responsibility.

The ODPM’s Hurricane Guide is available at www.odpm.gov.tt/hurricaneguide.

This guide offers valuable information to assist organisations and individuals to develop hurricane preparedness awareness.

Citizens should continue to monitor the website and social media profiles of the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service and the ODPM for weather forecasts, alerts, warnings and cancellations. Visit www.metoffice.gov.tt or wwww.odpm.gov.tt for further details.

WE WISH TO UNDERSCORE THAT AT THIS TIME TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO IS NOT UNDER ANY TROPICAL STORM, WATCH OR WARNING.
