PUBLIC ADVISORY #1 - Prepare for Adverse Weather Conditions

PUBLIC ADVISORY #1

Tuesday 31st July, 2018                                                        5:40 P.M.

Prepare for Adverse Weather Conditions

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) issued an Adverse Weather Watch – Yellow Level on Tuesday 31st July, 2018 for the period Wednesday 1st August, 2018 at 12:01 a.m. to Thursday 2nd August, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.

The TTMS has advised that Trinidad and Tobago should expect intermittent showers and thunderstorms over the period due to the presence of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Gusty winds, street/flash flooding can be expected near heavy showers and thunderstorms. Landslides/landslips are possible in areas so prone.

 The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) would like citizens to Get Ready and Stay Ready by implementing the following steps:

1.     Place important personal documents, valuables and vital medical supplies into a waterproof bag or container in an accessible location;

2.     Monitor weather conditions and advisories from official sources before leaving home or work;

3.     Pre-position sandbags around your property, especially if your area or property has a history of flooding;

4.     If there are signs that flooding is about to occur near your property, move important items to a higher floor if possible;

5.     After heavy rainfall, stay inside until water levels have subsided;

6.     Do not walk or drive through flood waters of unknown depth and current;

7.     Do not allow your children to play outside during heavy downpours or in flood waters;

8.     Learn the toll-free hotline numbers of your Municipal Corporation.

Citizens should continue to monitor the website and social media profiles of the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service and the ODPM for weather forecasts, alerts, warnings and cancelations. Visit http://www.metoffice.gov.tt or wwww.odpm.gov.tt.

The ODPM reminds all citizens if impacted by the adverse weather to contact your Municipal Corporation or the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) through its toll-free hotline numbers.

WE WISH TO UNDERSCORE THAT TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO IS NOT CURRENTLY UNDER ANY TROPICAL STORM OR HURRICANE THREAT, WATCH OR WARNING.
