ODPM advises citizens to Get Ready and Stay Ready for inclement weather conditions

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM), as the lead coordinator of Disaster Risk Management, remains in contact with the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government and other first responder and support agencies to ensure immediate assistance can be rendered when requested due to inclement weather conditions.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service cancelled the Severe Weather Watch #1 on Saturday 19th May, 2018 which projected severe weather throughout across Trinidad and Tobago. However, the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service forecast for the period this afternoon and tonight advises that Trinidad and Tobago would be partly cloudy to mostly cloudy and hazy with periods of showers at times. There is a low to medium chance of the heavy shower or thundershower in a few areas. Gusty winds, street or flash flooding may occur in heavy showers and/or thundershowers.

Thus, if inclement weather ensues the ODPM would like citizens to Get Ready and Stay Ready, by implementing the following steps:

  1. Clear drains around your property;
  2. Clear debris from your gutters and downspouts;
  3. Place important personal documents, valuables and vital medical supplies into a waterproof bag or container in an accessible location;
  4. Build an emergency kit with enough food, water, and medical supplies for at least three (3) days;
  5. Prepare a household emergency plan;
  6. Keep a list of emergency telephone numbers on your refrigerator or anywhere that is easily accessible to everyone in your household;
  7. Learn the numbers of your corporation, especially your Disaster Management Unit number (see attached);
  8. Monitor weather conditions before leaving the house;
  9. Listen or look out for further updates on television, radio and social media.

Flooding, fallen trees, and landslips can occur anywhere and at any time. Be sure you and your family are Ready and Stay Ready!
