Public Advisory - Monday 12th February, 2018 – Safety Tips during the Carnival Season

PUBLIC ADVISORY

Monday 12th February, 2018 – 10:00 am

SAFETY TIPS DURING THE CARNIVAL SEASON 2018

In keeping with the commitment to build the resilience and capacity of Trinidad and Tobago, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) wishes to advise all citizens of multiple public safety tips for Carnival 2018. The ODPM’s National Emergency Operations Centre remains in monitoring mode at this time and we continue to engage all our key stakeholders including the  Strategic Services Agency (SSA), the Municipal Corporations Disaster Management Units (DMUs), Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), Radio Emergency Associated Communications Team (REACT), TT Fire Service, TT Defence Force, TT Police Service, Port Authority, Airports Authority, the Health Sector, various Ministries and National Agencies, event organisers, venue managers, educational institutions as well as members of the civil, public and private sectors.

The ODPM will like to advise masqueraders and spectators of all mass crowd activities or events to please be mindful of the following safety precautions:-

·         Only carry what you need to get you through the day. You can leave those extra credit cards and spare keys back at your hotel (in a well-hidden and secured area).

·         Remove valuable items from your pockets if possible.

·         If you must carry a bag, make it small and in a cross-body style that you can keep in front of you.

·         Maintain awareness of who is around you and what they are doing. If you see something suspicious, make eye contact with the perpetrator so that they know you are             aware of their actions. You should also report this to security personnel or a police officer.

·         Be aware of your surroundings and do not walk off into secluded unprotected areas on your own.

·         Stay alert and do not accept drinks from strangers.

The ODPM remains committed to building the resilience and ensuring the safety of all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. We wish to remind you to take all precautions to preserve life and property. Should you experience any emergencies, please contact the ODPM’s Customer Care Centre at 511 or 211 for the Tobago Emergency Management Agency. Additional emergency hotline numbers include TT Police Service: 999, TT Fire Service: 990 and Ambulance Service: 811. For additional safety tips and information, check our website www.odpm.gov.tt.
